Volunteering most certainly does not have the same meaning to companies all over the world. Some companies will actually pay for your flights and accommodation and other companies who offer ”true” volunteer projects require the volunteer to pay their way.

If you are looking for a little bit extra instead of travelling around why not give up your time to volunteer abroad, whether you decide to volunteer in Tanzania. or volunteer in South Africa there is a project for everyone. Any projects overseas that last from a few weeks to a year or so will most likely have to be paid for. Any work that you do abroad which is over a year chances are the company will pay you an allowance when you are there.

To volunteer abroad on a paid placement entirely depends on the skills you have as an individual. The most paid volunteer placements overseas go to college and university graduates as well as professionals in their fields. Doctors, relief workers, nurses and teachers are most in demand by volunteer companies. Usually you are able to tell by looking at a project as if there are no specific requirements volunteers are usually required to fund the project for themselves.

In general the companies will try and employ as many local people as possible as the project still has to function once you and the rest of the volunteers have left to go back home. The experience you gain is life changing and you are given the chance to learn a new language, culture and make lots of new friends in Africa.

Before you decide to volunteer overseas you might want to do a little research and find out what other volunteers did on there projects abroad. It is good to talk to ex-volunteers as it gives you a great insight into what you are getting yourself into.
