UK and US teachers are sent for overseas assignments for teaching English to people from other countries. Typically, these assignments range from a period of few months up to a year or slightly more. Depending on the duration of overseas stay, the teachers can purchase short term or long term international health insurance plans. Coverage periods, benefits as well as the validity period vary depending on the international insurance plan as well as the insurance provider.

International short term medical insurance plans are flexible in their coverage. Teachers can secure their travel for a minimum of five days up to a maximum period of one year. If the duration extends more than a year, you can renew the travel medical insurance plans for about 36 months at a time. Children, spouse and dependents can also benefit by enrolling under the same short term international insurance plan.

Short term international medical insurance plans can cover medical expenses including doctor consultation, surgeries, hospitalization and emergency repatriation. However, coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, dental treatments, vaccinations, preventive care tests and routine check-ups are generally excluded by these short duration travel medical insurance plans. Some short term international plans offer limited coverage during temporary visits back to the home country.

Long term international medical insurance plans are recommended if the initial planned travel abroad is for more than a year. Teachers can choose from two broad categories of coverage benefits – Fixed benefit and Comprehensive benefit.

In the case of fixed benefit plans, the benefits and coverage amounts are limited. Comprehensive plans offer more extensive coverage and prove to be beneficial over the long run.

Long term international insurance plans cover the insured during the stay at homeland also. In addition to submitting an enrolment form, applicants are also required to fill up medical questionnaires

Some of the long term international travel health insurance plans cover the insured for additional benefits like evacuation and repatriation, maternity coverage, pre-existing medical conditions, preventive care and other emergency medical assistance requirements. Based on the chosen services, the premiums rates are calculated.
